in my opinion quite effective, if it is not effective it will certainly not be applied in the long run, usually successful traders can not actually trade without installing a stop loss.

Successful traders do always apply stop loss in trading, so of course it's very effective unless the trader uses a cut loss then the stop loss becomes ineffective.
