depending on the strategy and what time frame you use. MA can also be combined with SMA, MACD and so on or other confirmatory indicators such as stall, bolingerband and even Fibonacci.

my favorite strategy is to use the Moving Averge 200 indicator. it's easy to use and can see trends clearly.
